GIFs are huge. The same animation as an MP4 is usually 1/10 the size and plays smoother. Drop a .gif here.

Why convert GIF to MP4?
GIF is a terrible video format. It only supports 256 colors at a time, compresses badly, and is often 10× larger than the same animation as MP4. Twitter, Reddit, and Discord all silently convert GIFs to MP4 behind the scenes for this reason.
Converting beforehand saves you bandwidth and gets you smoother playback.
Why converting a GIF to MP4 is almost always worth it
GIF is a 1987 image format that was never designed for video. It is limited to 256 colours per frame, has no real compression for moving pictures, and no audio. The result is that a few seconds of GIF can easily be ten or twenty times the size of the same clip as an MP4 — and look worse, because of the colour limit and the dithering used to work around it.
Converting to MP4 usually produces a dramatically smaller file with visibly better colour. This is why every large platform silently converts uploaded GIFs to video behind the scenes.
Where an MP4 works better
- Messaging and social. Smaller uploads, faster sending, and most apps play short MP4s in a loop anyway.
- Web pages. A looping muted
<video>is far kinder to page weight than an animated GIF, and it can be made to autoplay everywhere because it has no sound. - Editing. Editors handle MP4 natively; many treat a GIF as an awkward image sequence.
The one place GIF still wins is somewhere that only accepts images and not video — a few forums, some email clients, and certain wikis. If you need to go the other way, MP4 to GIF does that, and video to GIF starts from any video.
FAQ
Does the file get uploaded anywhere?
No. Nothing is uploaded. Open your browser's network tab while you convert and you will see your file never leaves the page. Once the converter itself has downloaded, it keeps working on this device even with no connection.
What's the maximum file size?
Browser memory is the limit. WebAssembly caps at 2–4 GB per file. Most laptops handle 1080p videos under a gigabyte comfortably.
Why is it slow on my phone?
FFmpeg-WASM runs on your CPU, not hardware video encoders. Phones have less CPU, so encoding takes longer.
Can I cancel mid-encode?
Yes. The Cancel button terminates the worker immediately. You'll wait a few seconds the next time you start.
